Remote work in Singapore- Overview

While remote working is not a statutory right in Singapore, guidelines have been introduced by the government to encourage companies to offer their staff greater work flexibility to support a better work life-balance. As there is currently no right to remote work, such working arrangements must be mutually agreed to by both parties.

Employees who want to work remotely in Singapore should put their request in writing to their employer addressing certain points such as their work schedule and contact details. They should also include their location as well as the suitability and safety of said location. The employer should be fair and objective in reviewing the request and typically respond within 3 weeks.

Remote work in Singapore – Laws & Regulations

The Tripartite Advisory in Singapore sets out progressive workplace practices employers can adopt to support their employees. The Tripartite Statement on Flexible Work Arrangements (FWAs) outlines recommendations which companies are encouraged to follow regarding telecommuting, staggered work hours and other flexible working arrangements. Although the guidelines set out by the Advisory are not enforceable by law, employers do observe them in practice.

Under the Workplace Safety and Health Act (WSHA) 2006, employers must also take reasonable measures to ensure the health and safety of remote employees. Employers may ask employees to send photos of their work location and may arrange a home workstation assessment.
