Employment contracts in Ghana

Employees in Ghana are legally entitled to a formal employment contract including all relevant details of employment such as salary and benefits. It should generally be written in the country’s official language of English and use the local currency of the Ghanaian cedi.

Ghana vacation leave

Employees in Ghana are generally entitled to 15 days of paid vacation leave per year.

Sick leave is not legally mandated in Ghana, but employers may choose to offer it as part of their benefits packages.

Parental leave in Ghana

Female workers in Ghana can usually take 12 weeks of paid maternity leave. Male workers may soon be legally entitled to paternity leave under new legislation that is currently in discussion.

Terminations and severance in Ghana

Employees in Ghana who are on contracts lasting under three years are legally entitled to two weeks of notice prior to termination. Those on contracts of more than three years are entitled to one month of notice.

Some contracts include specific clauses waiving the need for notice of termination.

 

Tax in Ghana

Employers and employees in Ghana must contribute a percentage of salaries to the country’s social security scheme. Employers must pay 13% and employees must pay 5.5%.

Ghana has a nationalized healthcare system, so employees are covered for their medical care. However, some employers may choose to provide private health insurance to their employees.
